Citroen C5 2001-2007

Citroen's hatchback that replaced the Xantia from April 2001. A larger car with much more interior space and equipped with Citröen's latest hydraulic suspension which was christened 'Hydractive 3'. This new suspension came with the benefit of automatic ride-height adjustment depending on vehicle speed and road surface. A further advantage for the estate car version is a switch in the load space which enables the driver to lower the rear of the car for easier loading.

Power came from 1.8 and 2.0-litre 4 cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines as well as 1.6, 2.0 and 2.2-litre direct injection diesel engines. In 2004, the C5 underwent a major facelift with new front and rear ends, to bring it into line with the look of the new Citroën C4.

For: Very comfortable ride. Good crash test rating. Roomy and much improved styling especially on the estate, excellent diesel engines choice, with a new 1.6 HDI for the face lift model.

Against: Expensive diesel particulate filters on 2.2 diesels can need replacement every 4 - 5 years. No rear wiper on Mk 1 (Mk II does have rear wiper). Not as enjoyable to drive as the Xantia. Open hatchback can deposit water into load area in wet and windy conditions. High number of faults.
