The Citroën GS and Citroën GSA were a mid range family car first produced by Citroen in the 1970’s. The GS was produced between 1970 - 1981 the GSA, which was basically a face lifted GS, then ran from 1979 – 1986.
The GS was another classic design by Robert Opron that beat his other designed entry the Citroen SM for European Car of the Year for 1971. The GS was one of the first more luxurious and comfortable mid range cars of the day. With aerodynamic lines and in 5-door hatchback or estate it was very spacious and quite.
It came with self leveling Hydropneumatic independent suspension which gave it outstanding road holding and the renown “magic carpet” ride. It also featured 4-disc brakes and sensitive rack & pinion steering.
Performance, however, was quite limited with its air-cooled ‘boxer’ engine. Citroen with all its inovations started experimenting with the Wankel engine in cooperation with NSU and in 1974 Citroën introduced the GS Birotor. Sadly it was short lived and its demise came the following year.
The GSA arrived in late 1979, with new look plastic bumpers and was slightly longer. The interior received a makeover with the new pod like auxiliary controls that were neatly placed close to the steering wheel for easy access.
