Citroen SM (1970-1975)

The Citroën SM is a sports performance 2 door coupe designed by Robert Opron and first seen on 11th March1970 at the Geneva Motor Show and produced by Citroën from 1970 to 1975.

After all the acholades of the DS, Citroen’s next project needed to push the bounderies even further, so the Citroen SM luxury sports tourer was a great  alliance between Citroën and Maserati. With the V6 engine designed by Maserati and coupled with Citroen’s aerodynamic design an sophisticated hydro-pneumatic suspension it gave the Citroen SM supercar status. It became one of the fastest front-wheel drive cars of its day with a top speed of around 142mph.

A competitive performer in motorsport, the SM won its first race at the Morocco Rally in 1971.

Technically innovative, with a supremely comfortable ride , the Citroën SM atained high regard for its unique styling, and the famous ‘magic-carpet ride’ suspension that gave it outstanding performance. The car also featured six headlamps with automatic levelling. Four power-assisted disc brakes, with independent front and rear circuits and automatically adjusted brake power according to vehicle load and weight distribution.

Sadly the United Kingdom sales were disproportionately low due to the SM only being produced at the plant in left hand drive form, so just some 325 right hand drive units were ever sold in the UK, and with the escalating fuel prices in 1975 coupled with the unimaginative dead hand of Peugeot the SM was finally killed off.
